$8.5 million has been allocated for 42 projects to improve access to health services in rural and remote communities

About

The National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program (NRRHIP) aims to improve access to health services by providing funding to rural and remote communities where the lack of infrastructure is a barrier to the establishment of new, or the enhancement of existing, health services.

The objectives of the National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program are to:

support local rural and remote communities to develop flexible, long-term solutions for the provision of health services to meet the needs of the community;

assist the establishment and/or refurbishment of primary health care and medical facilities in rural and remote communities;

retain community access to rural private hospital services;

support allied health professionals to establish, continue and/or enhance the delivery of privately insurable health services to rural and remote communities; and

make it easier for rural and remote communities to recruit and retain the services of general practitioners (GPs) and allied health professionals.

People in living in rural and remote communities will benefit from an innovative NRRHIP program that is boosting health and medical services across the nation.

Funding Results

$8.5 million has been allocated for 42 NRRHIP projects to make it easier for those living in rural and remote areas to see a doctor or allied health professional closer to home, the Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said.

“A wide range of projects in this round have been funded to improve access to services,” Ms Roxon said.

“They include the refurbishment of medical centres to provide extra space for doctors and other medical staff, the purchase of new equipment and the replacement of old, and the upgrading of training facilities to enhance student doctors’ consultation and learning experience.

“The Government has already delivered 100 projects which are completed and operational. This funding is yet another example of the importance that the Gillard Government places on the health and well-being of all Australians no matter where they live, closing the divide between rural and metropolitan health services.

“For example, in Braidwood NSW – a small town an hours drive from Canberra – we are providing almost $250,000 for the purchase of equipment towards establishing a dental practice in a township which did not have one before.

“These are just two of the NRRHIP projects we’re funding to ensure timely access to health services across Australia when and where people need them.

The first four rounds of NRRHIP funded175 projects, with a total value of $35 million.

A full list of both the NRRHIP funding recipients is detailed below:
